Tools of Accountability

Accountability is becoming an important part of any inspection program. Upper management must be able to understand all the good work you are doing. So for those of you who have been looking for tools you can use to tie in all your efforts to test, record, analyze, trend and report results of your ultrasonic surveys, here are some effective tools for you. Ultratrend DMS, UE Spectralyzer and the Ultrasound Gas Survey Reporting program can be used as part of a total program or they can be used separately. Ultratrend DMS is "freeware". It is a data management program that will help you view trends, create alarm reports, and keep all your inspection information in one place with application specific data fields for leak detection, electrical inspection, steam trap testing, bearing monitoring, valve inspection and generic testing.
There are many exciting features in this program. One important feature is the ability to review historical records of your test results and to easily produce a trend chart. When inserted into your report, this colorful chart will illustrate the status of current equipment and help identify problems.
With another feature, the alarm group, decibel levels can be set to identify faults, anomalies, or potential problems. As an example, using the delta dB selection, you can create alarms for bearings exceeding baseline levels which can be assigned for either lubrication (for condition based lubrication programs), re-testing, or for sound recording.

UE Spectralyzer is an easy-to-use full functioning FFT spectral analysis software. It will turn your laptop or PC into a spectrum analyzer. Downloaded wave files can be viewed in two views: spectral or time series. In addition to viewing the screens, you can hear the sound samples in real-time as they are played. Suspect electrical emissions, bearings, compressor valves and cavitation can be reviewed and analyzed.
An exciting feature is that wave files can be assigned to historical records in Ultratrend. While reviewing a file in Ultratrend, should a wave file be attached, a "launch" button can be clicked to launch UE Spectralyzer so that you can review the sound sample without exiting Ultratrend.
You can insert your spectral or time view along side your trend report in Ultratrend DMS to dramatically illustrate your findings.

Another exciting tool for those of you who want to demonstrate cost savings for your leak surveys is the Gas Survey Report Program. This can be used with most industrial gases, including compressed air. Incorporating UE's "Guess-timator" for CFM identification of leaks, the program automatically adjusts an Annualized Identified Cost Avoidance field in the main Report page. As part of a quality control feature for your surveys, there is also a Repaired Leaks Cost Avoidance field. This displays the percentage of leaks repaired for the year to date as well as a column showing monthly views of leaks repaired.
At a glance, you will be able to see which leaks have not as yet been repaired, Select the month in which the unrepaired leaks are noted and locate the specific item to be identified for further action.
There are two formats of this program, one for analog and one for digital users.
Both Ultratrend DMS and the Ultraprobe Gas Survey Report programs are available on UE Systems' web site as freeware.

Ultraprobe Tip:

When data logging information into the Ultraprobe 9000, you can save time by turning the Text editor off. To data log with the Text editor on, four clicks of the Store button are required while only two are required with it off. If you are using the Ultraprobe 10,000 and have uploaded data, select the Storage Display Mode to view the baseline data before storing your current test results.
