After Training, What?
A training class is not the end of your learning it is just the beginning. The class material is nothing more than a tool to help students open their minds to explore the best way to integrate ultrasound technology into their respective programs. The road towards successful condition monitoring and energy conservation begins with a goal and a plan.
For example, is the goal to become more effective with your inspection techniques? If so, set aside time to practice. Listen to the sound samples supplied in the class CD to familiarize yourself with the sounds before you go out to test.
Use the instrument in as many situations as possible. Start out with some controlled inspections. As an example, if you want to practice leak detection techniques, create a leak and listen. Have someone set up a leak without telling you the location. Then try to find it. Gradually place yourself into more and more challenging situations.

If your goal is to create an inspection route for trending and analysis, start working on setting up your program with Ultratrend DMS. Set up some small sample plants, applications, and locations. Consult with others to see if your set-up makes sense and then practice uploading your data, take some readings, store and download the data. Remember to set up the plant into small workable segments. Your physical plant can be set up in the software as a number of smaller "plants". Then review your equipment to determine the frequency of inspection and set up a schedule.
If you want to be able to record and analyze data, set time aside to practice before you go out for real. Record one or two sound samples, download them and review them on UE Spectralyzer.
If you have any difficulties or questions, remember your instructors are always available to assist. Just send us an email or call. Be sure to have all the details related to your question available.

Ultraprobe Tip:
If you're ever in a spot where you need to locate a specific pipe in a bundle, try one of these procedures.
TONE METHOD: go to one end of the pipe bundle and locate the particular pipe you wish to locate within the bundle. If the pipe can be cleared and opened, place the pipe tone generator (WTG2SP) in the opened end and turn it on high. Using the contact module at 40 kHz, touch a pipe further downstream in the bundle and listen. If the tone is heard, reduce the sensitivity/volume until the tone volume is very low and touch all the other pipes. The pipe with the loudest tone is the pipe you are trying to locate.
TAP METHOD: If the pipe cannot be opened, have someone gently tap the specific pipe you are trying to locate with a hammer. Using the contact probe at 25 kHz, touch one pipe and listen. If the tapping is heard, reduce the sensitivity/volume until the tapping sound is very low and proceed to touch all the other pipes. The pipe with the loudest sound within the bundle is your pipe of interest.
